Trump invited families of Americans killed by those in the country illegally to tell their stories of being “permanently separated” from their loved ones, an implicit comparison to the temporary family separations carried out under his hard-line policy.
“We’re gathered today to hear directly from the American victims of illegal immigration,” Trump said at a hastily organized White House event. “You know, you hear the other side, you never hear this side. You don’t know what’s going on. These are the American citizens permanently separated from their loved ones.
“The word ‘permanently’ being the word that you have to think about. Permanently. They’re not separated for a day or two days, these are permanently separated because they were killed by criminal illegal aliens.”
Trump and many of the family members who spoke criticized what they called one-sided media coverage that does not focus on their stories.
Trump gathering these poor grieving families to smear immigrants is disgusting.
Especially since the statistics prove that immigrants are actually far less likely to commit crimes in this country than American citizens:
The first study, published by the libertarian Cato Institute in February, examines criminal conviction data for 2015 provided by the Texas Department of Public Safety. It found that native-born residents were much more likely to be convicted of a crime than immigrants in the country legally or illegally.
“As a percentage of their respective populations, there were 56 percent fewer criminal convictions of illegal immigrants than of native-born Americans in Texas in 2015,” author Alex Nowrasteh writes. “The criminal conviction rate for legal immigrants was about 85 percent below the native-born rate.”
The data shows similar patterns for violent crimes such as homicide and property crimes such as larceny.
And Trump knows about these statistics as well, he just refuses to believe them:
“I always hear that, ‘Oh, no, the population’s safer than the people that live in the country,” Trump said, referring to statistical evidence he rejects that shows those in the country illegally commit crime at a lower rate than legal residents.
“You’ve heard that, fellas, right? You’ve heard that. I hear it so much, and I say, ‘Is that possible?’” Trump said.
“The answer is it’s not true. You hear it’s like they’re better people than what we have, than our citizens. It’s not true,” he said.
Remember, fake news is any news that refutes the “truth” of what Donald Trump is saying.
So he just stands there, lying about people coming to this country looking for a better life, and uses the pain of families who have lost loved ones to deflect criticism of his draconian policies.
This man is not just unfit to be the president of the United States, this man is unfit to be called a human being.
