Not only is the US separating immigrant children from their mothers but they have lost almost 1,500 of them.

Who are we again?

Courtesy of USA Today:

The Trump administration recently announced a new, get-tough policy that will separate parents from their children if the family is caught crossing the border illegally.

It was a big news story. So big it overshadowed the fact that the federal government has lost — yes, lost — 1,475 migrant children in its custody.

Homeland Security Secretary Kirstjen Nielsen told Congress that within 48 hours of being taken into custody the children are transferred to the Department of Health and Human Services, which finds places for them to stay.

“They will be separated from their parent,” said Sen. Kamala Harris, D-Calif.

“Just like we do in the United States every day,” Nielsen replied.

Except that the states, unlike the federal government, have systems in place to better screen the people who become guardians of the children and much better ways to keep track of those children.

And not lose them.

How in the hell do you lose almost 1,500 children?

And it is bad enough that these children are being taken from families that try to sneak across the border, but on the Chris Hayes Show last night it was made clear that this also happens to families who are seeking asylum and turn themselves into border authorities.

Those are not criminals by any stretch of the imagination, they are following the rules, and yet they will still have their children taken from them and possibly lost in the system.

Even children as young as fifteen months in one case.

That is fucking heartbreaking!

But guess what? It gets even worse.

According to a PBS investigation, some of these children are given to human traffickers because HHS does not have a comprehensive system in place to make sure “sponsors” are not criminals or sexual predators.

Courtesy of PBS:

In 2014, at least 10 trafficking victims, including eight minors, were discovered during a raid by federal and local law enforcement in Portman’s home state of Ohio. As FRONTLINE examined in the recent documentary Trafficked in America, HHS had released several minors to the traffickers. The committee said the case was due to policies and procedures that were “inadequate to protect the children in the agency’s care.”

2014 so that was during the Obama Administration, and they deserve to take a serious hit on that.

However, we should also note that the Trump Administration has greatly increased the number of immigrants that they are locking up, which means that the number of children placed into the system has also greatly increased.

That means that rather than solve this problem the new administration has exacerbated the problem.

Though, of course, Trump is quick to lay the blame at the feet of the Democrats.

Well, that’s typical.

‘“One of the first things he did after entering office, President Trump and Jeff Sessions canceled this program,” Reyes explained. “So the problem is not the outrage, it’s the political will to move forward.”’
