California plans to launch a satellite to monitor pollution in the state and contribute to climate science, Governor Jerry Brown announced today. The state is partnering with satellite imagery purveyor Planet to create a custom craft to “pinpoint – and stop – destructive emissions with unprecedented precision, on a scale that’s never been done before.”

Governor Brown made the announcement in the closing remarks of the Global Climate Action Summit in San Francisco, echoing a pledge made two years ago to scientists at the American Geophysical Union’s 2016 meeting.

“With science still under attack and the climate threat growing, we’re launching our own damn satellite,” Brown said today.

Planet, which has launched hundreds of satellites in the last few years in order to provide near-real-time imagery of practically anywhere on Earth, will develop and operate the satellite. The plan is to equip it with sensors that can detect pollutants at their point sources, be they artificial or natural. That kind of direct observation enables direct action.

Man, California does not just sit around waiting, does it?

It’s too bad that Jerry will be 82 years old before the 2020 election, he would make a great Democratic presidential candidate.

HAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAA! Didn’t you learn in 2016 that California does not elect Presidents!?

Governor Moonbeam probably wouldn’t even win NY State or Illinois! My god man you are ridiculous!

FYI California is the second highest Carbon Dioxide producing State behind Texas. You don;t need a satellite for thews numbers….

Speaking of emissions Moonbeam, how bought them rocket launches: https://www.theverge.com/2018/5/31/17287062/rocket-emissions-black-carbon-alumina-particles-ozone-layer-stratosphere

    LOL.

Also the 5th largest economy in the world if California were a sovereign country. I’m for secession. Then we’d be way down the list on emmissions and way up the list on solar PV power generation, the U.S. slipping down the list and China climbing up. With The Sovereign State of California on the list the U.S. would probably slip behind Italy, Japan, Germany, China and California in PV per capita.

Our economy would do better since D. C. wouldn’t be sucking up all of our tax dollars for red state welfare.

Right after Trump pulled out of the Paris Accord, Brown announced that California would honor it anyway and hold a summit. That summit took place (this announcement was at the conclusion) and was attended not only by representatives of cities and states across the U.S. but representatives from other countries, some quite high up in the government hierarchy including the Pacific Island states and Norway. Chine sent an entire contingent to the conference.

Basically Brown stepped in to lead when Trump stepped out to play golf.

You’re right. Brown would be the perfect 2020 candidate except for being 82. There’s a reason California elected him twice to be governor and he’s served multiple terms. California lead the nation in reducing car emissions. Toyota can thank California for the success of the Prius. Tesla is based here.
