Canadian Prime Minister Justin Trudeau has ordered a study of a potential full handgun and assault weapons ban in his country.

Trudeau ordered Border Security and Organized Crime Reduction Minister Bill Blair to conduct the study with Public Safety Minister Ralph Goodale in a mandate letter, as reported by CBC News.

“You should lead an examination of a full ban on handguns and assault weapons in Canada, while not impeding the lawful use of firearms by Canadians,” the letter stated.

I swear Canada is looking better and better every day.

According to what I have seen on CBC news, they are having a big problem in Toronto with shootings recently.

Yes and no. It’s worse than ever but Toronto could never really get it up, so gun murders in the 70/year range are now a big deal.

What’s changed is the report that the majority of our handguns are locally sourced. Stolen or borrowed from legal collectors here in Canada, as opposed to smuggled across the US border. As it turns out the report was untrue, the vast majority of handguns used in Canadian crimes are still smuggled from the USA.

I’m for ALL restrictions on handgun ownership and some on long gun ownership here in Canada but don’t think any ban will change the source of guns used in crime very much.
